RXLites 2015 season has ended in a style at Franciacorta Circuit. The penultimate round of FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy hosted the last round of RXLites series this weekend. 11 contenders started the event which was hit by rain. Slippery surface provided both joy and drama through the final races.
Last year’s Champion Kevin Eriksson finished the race and the season in a style as winning the Italian round. Eriksson won the season-opener in Portugal this year and repeated the same success at the closing event. This victory carried him to second place at the season standings, however not enough to defend his crown.
Kevin Hansen Jr finished second in Italy and secured enough points to be the new RXLites Champion. Even though there was only one victory in his hand from Lydden Hill this year, he proved the importance of consistancy and well deserved the 2015 title. RedBull Athlete and Peugeot Hansen Junior Team driver kept himself away from risky moves all weekend and managed to guarantee his place on the podium. As it was announced, he will have chance to drive a SuperCar as his prize for the victory in Argentina, at the last round of 2015 FIA WorldRX.
The flashing name of the season Thomas Bryntesson surprised his fans as he couldn’t make it to final. Young Norwegian won the last 3 Heats and led the Intermediate points trough Semi-Finals. But after a contact at the Semi1 he had to retire for the first time in this season and lost his chances to win the title.
Joachim Hvaal stepped on the 3rd place of the podium. This result was his first podium ever in RXLites series. His consistent drive and defensive style helped him to get the trophy at the last round in Italy.
One of the storming names of the weekend was Simon Olofsson. John Deere sponsored driver started the weekend with a Heat win. Continued his performance on following heats and won the Semi-Final1. It was expected him to be on the podium by the fans considering his speed but right after the start on the Final race he couldn’t avoid a contact on the slippery wet surface and had to retire on the following lap. After missing in TurkeyRX, it was important for him to get the most points available in order to place himself at the 4th position of General Standings. But after the incident he finished 5th overall at the season.
OlsbergsMSE squad has two more wildcards racing next to Kevin Eriksson: his younger brother Oliver Eriksson and GRCLites Team Mate Austin Cindric. Currently, Austin is leading the GRCLites of USA and Oliver is only 3 points behind him at the second place. Only Oliver could managed to get to the final race and finishing 4th where Austin finished 4th at the Semi-Final 2 and loosing his ticket to final race.
Simon Syversen completed the Final group by finishing 5th and with this result he collected enough points to finish the season at 6th position. On the other hand Lotto Team drivers were not happy with the weekend. It was a very short weekend for Polish rally legend Krzysztof Holowczyc. He had an engine failure right after the start of very first free practice session of the weekend and had to retire in smokes after driving a few hundred meters. His team mate Martin Kaczmarski finished 4th at the Semi-Final1 and lost the chance to start at the final race.
Young Kenyan driver Tejas Hirani was another name to struggle under the track conditions this weekend. He managed to win Heat3 Race1 and did his best to improve his pace over the weekend but had to retire from Semi Final 2 after a contact with Austin Cindric which damages the car.
RXLites 2015 season is over with many unforgetable memories. The series has hosted 31 different drivers from 11 different countries; from Scandinavia to Colombia and USA to Kenya or Qatar. On its second year, the series has proved that it is more than a supporting event for WorldRX and also a source for future Rallycross stars. It has attracted more diverse nationalities than any other series which makes it a true International Championship.
The last round of FIA WorldRX will be organised in Argentina on 27-29 November. It has moved to its new venue which is a race track in Rosario, Santa Fe. Kevin Hansen will be driving a SuperCar as his winning prize at the last race of the 2015 season and RXLites Team wishes our new Champion the best luck on his first outing among the WorldRX regulars.
